The Dresden Files Books in Order

Every The Dresden Files book in publication order — 24 in total, spanning 2000–2026.

Picture a private detective's office in Chicago with one difference from every other one you've read about: the listing in the Yellow Pages says "Wizard." That's Harry Dresden — tall, broke, allergic to authority, and the only openly practicing wizard in the phone book — and The Dresden Files is the story of how the cases he takes to cover the rent slowly pull him into something much, much bigger. Jim Butcher started the series in 2000 as a wisecracking supernatural noir, and by the middle books it had grown into one of the great long-form fantasy sagas of our time, all without losing the smart mouth. Eighteen novels in, with Twelve Months (2026) the newest, it's still going — and still best read in order.

A reader's guide to The Dresden Files

Why you should read them in order (yes, really)

Plenty of mystery series let you dip in anywhere. This one doesn't, and that's a compliment. Each Dresden novel is built like a detective story — a client, a problem, a deadline — but underneath the case-of-the-week Butcher is laying down a very long game: alliances, grudges, favors owed, and a supernatural political map of Chicago that keeps redrawing itself. Characters who walk on for two scenes in book three become the emotional center of book twelve. Read them in publication order and every reunion, every betrayal, every 'wait, I remember him' lands the way it's meant to.

The good news is that publication order and chronological order are the same thing here, so there's no puzzle to solve. Start with Storm Front and keep going. The novellas and short stories (collected in Side Jobs and Brief Cases, plus the standalone novella The Law) are lovely extras, but they're desserts, not courses — read them after the novel they sit next to, or save them for when you've caught up and are waiting on the next book like the rest of us.

A fair warning about the first two books

Ask a room full of Dresden fans and most will tell you the same thing: the series gets dramatically better around books three and four, and truly catches fire by Dead Beat (book seven). Storm Front and Fool Moon are fun, fast and a little rough at the edges — Butcher wrote the first one as a writing-class exercise, and it shows in the best way, all energy and nerve. Grave Peril widens the world; Summer Knight introduces the faerie courts and the sense that Harry is a small piece on a very large board. If you're on the fence after book two, give it one more. Almost nobody who reaches Dead Beat ever stops.

What the series is actually about

On the surface: a wizard solving supernatural crimes in a Chicago where vampires run nightclubs, the faerie queens keep a very old treaty, and the White Council of wizards has rules Harry breaks with distressing regularity. Underneath: it's about a stubborn, decent man deciding, over and over, what he's willing to pay to protect the people he loves. Harry gets hurt in these books — really hurt — and the cost accumulates. That's the secret engine of the series. The jokes keep you turning pages; the consequences keep you coming back.

It's also, quietly, one of the best ensemble casts in modern fantasy. Karrin Murphy, the Chicago cop who has to decide how much of Harry's world she wants to see. Bob, a spirit of intellect who lives in a skull and has the manners of a frat boy. Michael Carpenter, a Knight of the Cross whose goodness is never once played for laughs. Thomas, Molly, Mouse the very large dog. You'll pick favorites. You'll argue about them.

Where the story stands now

Butcher has said the plan is roughly twenty case-file novels followed by a big apocalyptic trilogy to finish things, which means we're well past the halfway mark but nowhere near the end. Peace Talks and Battle Ground (both 2020) were written as one enormous story split in two, and they change the shape of the series — go in knowing that the second is a direct, immediate continuation of the first. Twelve Months (January 2026) is the eighteenth novel and picks up in the long aftermath, following Harry through the year after those events. Mirror Mirror is the announced title for book nineteen.

Beyond the novels: novellas, comics, the TV show

Side Jobs (2010) and Brief Cases (2018) gather the short fiction, and each ends with a novella set right after a major novel — so read Side Jobs after Changes and Brief Cases after Skin Game. Working for Bigfoot (2014) is a charming trio of stories about Harry doing odd jobs for a very polite sasquatch. The Law (2022) is a novella set after Battle Ground. There's also a run of graphic novels, including Welcome to the Jungle, an original story set before Storm Front that Butcher wrote himself.

As for the 2007 Sci Fi Channel series: it ran a single season, and Butcher has been gracious but clear that it's an alternate-universe take rather than an adaptation. Watch it as a curiosity if you like. The books are the real thing.

The Dresden Files on screen

Harry has had one trip to the screen so far, and Butcher himself describes it as a parallel world rather than a retelling — same name on the door, different story inside.

  • 2007The Dresden FilesTV series — Sci Fi Channel; one season of 12 episodes, with Paul Blackthorne as Harry. Loosely inspired by the books rather than adapted from them.

If you liked the show, read the books

Liked Supernatural (The CW / Netflix)? Start The Dresden Files — same mix of monsters, wisecracks and found family, with a far bigger long game.

Liked Constantine (NBC / Max)? Harry Dresden is the closest thing American fantasy has to John Constantine with a conscience. Begin with Storm Front.

Frequently asked

What order should I read The Dresden Files in?

Publication order, which is also chronological order: Storm Front (2000), Fool Moon, Grave Peril, Summer Knight, Death Masks, Blood Rites, Dead Beat, Proven Guilty, White Night, Small Favor, Turn Coat, Changes, Ghost Story, Cold Days, Skin Game, Peace Talks, Battle Ground (2020) and Twelve Months (2026). Slot in the story collections Side Jobs after Changes and Brief Cases after Skin Game.

How many Dresden Files books are there?

Eighteen novels as of 2026, with Twelve Months the newest. Jim Butcher has said he plans roughly twenty case-file novels and then a concluding apocalyptic trilogy. Book nineteen, Mirror Mirror, has been announced.

Is Twelve Months the last Dresden Files book?

No. Twelve Months (January 2026) is book eighteen. Butcher has said the series will run about twenty case-file novels before a final trilogy, and the next book is titled Mirror Mirror.

Do I need to read Peace Talks and Battle Ground together?

Yes — they were written as one very long story and split into two volumes published two months apart in 2020. Battle Ground picks up immediately where Peace Talks ends, so have both on hand.

Can I skip the first two Dresden Files books?

You can, but we don't recommend it. Storm Front and Fool Moon are lighter and rougher than what follows, but they introduce the core cast and set up threads that pay off for years. Most fans say the series hits its stride around Grave Peril and Summer Knight and becomes unmissable by Dead Beat.

Is there a Dresden Files TV show?

There was — a single 12-episode season on the Sci Fi Channel in 2007, starring Paul Blackthorne. It reimagines the characters rather than adapting specific books, and Butcher has described it as an alternate version of his world.
