Jim Butcher Books in Order

Every Jim Butcher book in publication order — 33 in total, spanning 2000–2026.

Jim Butcher wrote his first novel to prove a point. He was a writing student who thought his instructor's advice was too formulaic, so he followed it to the letter, fully expecting the result to flop and win the argument. The result was Storm Front, the first Dresden Files book, and the argument was lost in the best possible way. Three series later — a wizard detective in Chicago, a Roman-flavored epic fantasy about a boy with no magic, and a steampunk adventure among sky-high spires — Butcher has become one of the most reliably entertaining fantasy writers alive, a storyteller who never forgets that you're supposed to be having fun.

Jim Butcher's three series, and how to choose

The Dresden Files (2000–present)

Harry Dresden, Chicago's only professional wizard, takes on supernatural cases that keep getting bigger and more personal. Eighteen novels so far, from Storm Front to Twelve Months (2026), plus story collections and novellas. Read strictly in publication order — the long game is the whole point. This is where most readers begin, and it's the series that made Butcher's name.

Codex Alera (2004–2009)

Legend has it Codex Alera began with a bet: that Butcher could write a good novel out of any two bad ideas a challenger handed him. The ideas were the Lost Roman Legion and Pokémon. What he built is a six-book epic set in Alera, a Rome-like realm where nearly everyone commands elemental spirits called furies — except a farm boy named Tavi, who has none, and has to be smarter than everybody else instead. Start with Furies of Calderon and read straight through to First Lord's Fury; it's a complete, finished story, which makes it a wonderful pick if you'd like a Butcher series you can actually finish.

The Cinder Spires (2015–present)

Butcher's steampunk series is set in a world where humanity lives in enormous stone spires above a mist-shrouded, monster-filled surface and travels between them by airship. The Aeronaut's Windlass (2015) introduces a privateer captain, a pair of young noblewomen, a warriorborn fighter and — this being Butcher — a talking cat with opinions. After a long wait, the story continued with the novella Warriorborn and the second novel The Olympian Affair, both in 2023. It's the most swashbuckling thing he's written.

Which one first?

If you like your fantasy modern, funny and noir-tinged, start with the Dresden Files. If you want a big, finished epic with battles and politics, Codex Alera. If you want airships, sword fights and a cat, Cinder Spires. All three share the Butcher signature: heroes who are outmatched, keep getting up anyway, and are genuinely good company along the way.

Frequently asked

What order should I read Jim Butcher books in?

Read each series in publication order. The Dresden Files: Storm Front (2000) through Twelve Months (2026). Codex Alera: Furies of Calderon, Academ’s Fury, Cursor’s Fury, Captain’s Fury, Princeps’ Fury, First Lord’s Fury. The Cinder Spires: The Aeronaut’s Windlass, then Warriorborn (novella) and The Olympian Affair. The series are independent, so pick whichever appeals and start at book one.

What is the newest Jim Butcher book?

Twelve Months (January 2026), the eighteenth Dresden Files novel. Before that came The Olympian Affair (2023), the second Cinder Spires novel, and the Cinder Spires novella Warriorborn (2023). The Dresden novella The Law appeared in 2022.

Is Codex Alera finished?

Yes — it is a complete six-book series, published from Furies of Calderon (2004) to First Lord’s Fury (2009). It is a great choice if you want a Jim Butcher series with an ending.

Will there be a third Cinder Spires book?

Butcher has said the Cinder Spires is planned as a longer series, and The Olympian Affair (2023) sets up more to come, but no release date for a third novel has been announced.

How did Jim Butcher come up with The Dresden Files?

He wrote Storm Front as a student in a writing class taught by novelist Deborah Chester, largely to prove her structured approach would not work — and it worked. It then took him more than two years to find a publisher; the series launched in 2000 and has been running ever since.
