The Chronicles Of Narnia Books in Order

Every The Chronicles Of Narnia book in publication order — 20 in total, spanning 1950–1999.

A wardrobe in a spare room, a lamppost in a snowy wood, a faun with an umbrella — and behind them a whole world, ruled by a witch who has made it always winter and never Christmas. C.S. Lewis wrote the seven Chronicles of Narnia between 1950 and 1956, and they have been the first great fantasy series in millions of childhoods ever since. They are short, vivid and surprisingly funny, and they carry a weight of feeling that catches adult rereaders off guard. Below is the series in order — both orders, since Narnia is the rare series where that's a real argument — plus the new Netflix film to know about.

Publication order vs. chronological order

The two orders

Publication order — the order Lewis wrote and released them: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950), Prince Caspian (1951), The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1952), The Silver Chair (1953), The Horse and His Boy (1954), The Magician's Nephew (1955), The Last Battle (1956). Chronological order — by Narnian history, and the numbering on most box sets since HarperCollins adopted it in 1994: The Magician's Nephew, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Horse and His Boy, Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair, The Last Battle.

Which to choose

For a first reading, publication order, without much hesitation. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe introduces Narnia as Lewis introduced it — a mystery discovered — and The Magician's Nephew is written as a prequel, full of moments that only pay off if you already know what a lamppost in a wood means. The Horse and His Boy, a standalone adventure set during the reign of the Pevensies, reads best after you've met them. Chronological order is a fine way to reread. And if a child has already started with The Magician's Nephew because it says '1' on the spine, don't worry: the series survives it.

On screen — and the 2027 Netflix film

The BBC adapted the first four books in the late 1980s, Disney and Walden Media made three big films between 2005 and 2010 before stopping, and Netflix bought the rights in 2018. Greta Gerwig's Narnia: The Magician's Nephew — with Meryl Streep voicing Aslan, Emma Mackey as the young Jadis, Carey Mulligan and Daniel Craig — opens in theaters on February 12, 2027 and comes to Netflix on April 2, 2027. It is, notably, the first adaptation to begin with the prequel, so expect the order debate to flare up all over again.

The Chronicles Of Narnia on screen

Narnia has been on screen since 1967, and the most ambitious adaptation yet — Greta Gerwig's Netflix film — is due in early 2027.

Liked The Chronicles of Narnia films (Disney+)? The films stopped at book three of publication order — The Silver Chair, The Horse and His Boy, The Magician’s Nephew and The Last Battle are all still waiting for you.

Frequently asked

What order should I read The Chronicles of Narnia in?

Publication order for a first read: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair, The Horse and His Boy, The Magician’s Nephew, The Last Battle. Chronological order (The Magician’s Nephew first) is what most box sets print and is a good way to reread.

How many Narnia books are there?

Seven, published between 1950 and 1956. The picture-book retellings and companion volumes in the list above are later abridgements for younger children, not part of the series.

Should I start with The Magician’s Nephew?

We suggest not, even though it is often numbered 1. It was written sixth as a prequel and is richer once you know Narnia. Start with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

When is the new Narnia movie coming out?

Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew opens in theaters on February 12, 2027 and streams on Netflix from April 2, 2027. Meryl Streep voices Aslan.
