Percy Jackson Books in Order
Every Percy Jackson book in publication order — 22 in total, spanning 2005–2025.
Percy Jackson is a twelve-year-old with ADHD and dyslexia who keeps getting expelled, until the day his pre-algebra teacher turns into a monster and he learns that his absent father is Poseidon, god of the sea. Rick Riordan wrote The Lightning Thief as a bedtime story for his son, and it became one of the best-selling children's series of the century: five original books, a sprawling universe of sequels and spin-offs, and now a Disney+ series that finally does the books justice. Below is every Percy Jackson book in order — and, because Riordan's world has grown enormous, a map of where to go once you've finished the first five.

How to read Percy Jackson in order
The original five (2005–2009)
The Lightning Thief, The Sea of Monsters, The Titan's Curse, The Battle of the Labyrinth and The Last Olympian tell one story over five summers: a prophecy about a child of the Big Three gods, a war brewing with the Titans, and a kid who'd rather be at the beach. Read them strictly in order. They are fast, funny and smarter about Greek myth than they let on — Riordan taught middle-school Latin and mythology for fifteen years and it shows on every page.
The Senior Year Adventures (2023–)
Fourteen years after The Last Olympian, Riordan came back to Percy's own voice. The Chalice of the Gods (2023) and Wrath of the Triple Goddess (2024) are shorter, lighter, funnier books about Percy trying to get into college — he needs three letters of recommendation from gods, and gods don't hand those out for free. They are set after the Heroes of Olympus series, so strictly speaking you should read that first, but they are written to work for anyone who's read the original five. A third Senior Year book is confirmed and in progress; no title or date yet.
Where Percy goes next — the wider Camp Half-Blood world
The Heroes of Olympus (five books, 2010–2014) is the true sequel series: it introduces a second, Roman camp and a new cast, with Percy and Annabeth back in the story from book two. The Trials of Apollo (five books, 2016–2020) follows the god Apollo, stripped of his powers and stuck in the body of a teenager, with Percy as a supporting player. The Nico di Angelo Adventures — The Sun and the Star (2023) and The Court of the Dead (2025), both co-written with Mark Oshiro — follow one of the series' most beloved side characters. The Kane Chronicles (Egyptian gods) and Magnus Chase (Norse gods) are separate series that cross over with Percy in a handful of short stories. And a new Camp Half-Blood series begins with The Wild Zone in September 2026.
The simplest path: original five → Heroes of Olympus → Trials of Apollo → Senior Year Adventures and the Nico books. Or read the five and the Senior Year books and stop there, perfectly happily.
The show vs. the books
Two Percy Jackson films came out in 2010 and 2013 and Riordan has been cheerfully vocal about how little he liked them — he has said he never watched them. The Disney+ series, which he co-created and writes for, is the adaptation fans waited for: one season per book, cast at the right ages, faithful to the plot and the jokes. Season one (The Lightning Thief) premiered December 2023, season two (The Sea of Monsters) in December 2025, and season three (The Titan's Curse) arrives in November 2026.
Percy Jackson on screen
After two films the author disowned, Percy finally got the adaptation he deserved — with Riordan himself in the writers' room.
- 2010Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning ThiefFilm — Logan Lerman; aged the characters up and changed the plot. Followed by Sea of Monsters (2013).
- 2023Percy Jackson and the OlympiansTV series — Disney+; Walker Scobell as Percy, Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth, Aryan Simhadri as Grover. One book per season — S1 Dec 2023, S2 Dec 2025, S3 (The Titan’s Curse) Nov 2026.
If you liked the show, read the books
Liked Percy Jackson and the Olympians (Disney+)? Read the book the current season is adapting, then keep going — the show is a season behind the books and there are 20-plus more novels in the world.
Liked Harry Potter (Max / Films)? Percy Jackson is the natural next series for a Potter kid: a hidden world, a summer camp instead of a school, and monsters drawn from real mythology.
Frequently asked
What order should I read the Percy Jackson books in?
The Lightning Thief (2005), The Sea of Monsters (2006), The Titan’s Curse (2007), The Battle of the Labyrinth (2008), The Last Olympian (2009). Then, if you want more Percy: The Heroes of Olympus (five books), The Trials of Apollo (five books), and the Senior Year Adventures — The Chalice of the Gods (2023) and Wrath of the Triple Goddess (2024).
How many Percy Jackson books are there?
Seven narrated by Percy himself — the original five plus The Chalice of the Gods and Wrath of the Triple Goddess — with a third Senior Year book confirmed. Counting the whole Camp Half-Blood universe (Heroes of Olympus, Trials of Apollo, the Nico di Angelo Adventures and companion books) there are well over twenty.
Do I need to read Heroes of Olympus before The Chalice of the Gods?
It helps but it is not required. The Chalice of the Gods is set after Heroes of Olympus and mentions events from it, but it is written to be enjoyed by anyone who has finished The Last Olympian.
Is the Disney+ show faithful to the books?
Yes — far more so than the 2010 and 2013 films. Rick Riordan co-created the series and each season adapts one book: season 1 is The Lightning Thief, season 2 The Sea of Monsters, and season 3 (November 2026) The Titan’s Curse.
What age are the Percy Jackson books for?
Roughly 9 to 14, though plenty of adults read them. The original five are middle-grade; The Heroes of Olympus and Trials of Apollo skew slightly older as the characters do.
