Sue Grafton Books in Order

Every Sue Grafton book in publication order — 41 in total, spanning 1967–2017.

Meet Kinsey Millhone: a twice-divorced ex-cop turned private eye who cuts her own hair with nail scissors, lives in a converted garage, and would genuinely rather have a peanut-butter-and-pickle sandwich than dinner at a nice restaurant. Sue Grafton introduced her in 1982 with "A" Is for Alibi, and then did something wonderful — she spent the next thirty-five years working her way through the alphabet, one sharp, funny, beautifully-plotted mystery at a time, all set in the sun-warmed (and entirely invented) town of Santa Teresa, California. Grafton famously refused to hand Kinsey over to Hollywood, so there's only one way to meet her: on the page, exactly where she belongs.

Frequently asked

What order should I read the Sue Grafton books in?

Alphabetically, which happily is also publication order — from "A" Is for Alibi (1982) through "Y" Is for Yesterday (2017). Each case stands alone, but Kinsey and Santa Teresa are better company the longer you stay.

How many Kinsey Millhone books are there?

Twenty-five — one for every letter from A through Y.

Is there a "Z" book?

Sadly, no. Sue Grafton passed away in late 2017 having reached Y, and her family shared that, as far as they're concerned, the alphabet now ends at Y — a graceful close to a much-loved series.

Is there a Sue Grafton TV show or movie?

No — Grafton was famously protective of Kinsey and never sold the screen rights, so this is one detective who lives entirely in the books.
