Mark Twain Books in Order

Every Mark Twain book in publication order — 53 in total, spanning 1867–2009.

He was born under Halley's Comet in 1835 and, as he predicted, went out with it in 1910, and in between Samuel Clemens — riverboat pilot, failed silver miner, newspaperman, lecturer, bankrupt, and under the name Mark Twain the funniest writer America has ever produced — more or less invented the American voice. Hemingway said all modern American literature comes from one book, Huckleberry Finn, and he wasn't exaggerating much. But Twain wrote a great deal more than Tom and Huck: travel books that are still laugh-out-loud funny, a time-travel novel, a savage little fable about a town that thinks it's honest, and an autobiography he ordered sealed for a hundred years. Here's how to find your way around.

A reader's guide to Mark Twain

Tom and Huck, in order

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884 in Britain, 1885 in America) are the essential pair, and they should be read in that order: Huck's book picks up weeks after Tom's ends and assumes you know the cast. The two late sequels, Tom Sawyer Abroad (1894) and Tom Sawyer, Detective (1896), are slight, cheerful and completely optional; Twain wrote them for money and never pretended otherwise. Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer Among the Indians is an unfinished fragment published long after his death, for completists only.

A word about Huckleberry Finn: it is narrated by an uneducated boy in the 1840s South and uses the language of that time and place, including a racial slur that appears hundreds of times. It has been challenged in schools since the year it was published — originally for being vulgar, later for that word. It is also, at its heart, a book about a white boy slowly realizing that the enslaved man he's traveling with is the best person he knows. Read it with that in mind, and it remains one of the great American novels.

The other novels

The Prince and the Pauper (1881) is a swashbuckling switched-identity tale set in Tudor England and a wonderful read-aloud. A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1889) sends a nineteenth-century mechanic back to Camelot, starts as farce and turns unexpectedly dark — it's the Twain novel most likely to surprise you. Pudd'nhead Wilson (1894) is a strange, bitter small-town story about switched babies and slavery. The Gilded Age (1873, with Charles Dudley Warner) named an entire era. And Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc (1896) was, improbably, the book Twain himself considered his best; almost nobody agrees, but it's worth knowing he thought so.

The travel books and the humor — where Twain is funniest

Twain made his name not with novels but with travel writing and comic sketches, and they hold up astonishingly well. The Innocents Abroad (1869), about a shipload of Americans loose in Europe and the Holy Land, made him famous. Roughing It (1872), about his years in Nevada and California during the silver boom, is the funniest thing he ever wrote. Life on the Mississippi (1883) is half memoir of his riverboat-pilot youth and half travelogue, and the memoir half is glorious. For the short pieces, start with The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County (1867), the story that launched him, and The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg (1900), a perfect, pitiless fable about a town's reputation for honesty.

The autobiography he wanted sealed for a century

Twain dictated his autobiography in his last years, ranging freely and often unkindly over everyone he'd known, and left instructions that the full text not be published until a hundred years after his death. Heavily edited versions appeared in 1924 and after — the three 'Volume 1–3' entries dated 1925 in the list above descend from those — but the complete, uncensored Autobiography of Mark Twain was finally published by the University of California Press in three volumes between 2010 and 2015. If you want Twain unfiltered, that's the edition. Letters from the Earth, his blistering late satire on religion, was likewise held back by his family until 1962.

Mark Twain on screen

Tom and Huck have been filmed more times than anyone has counted, and Twain himself has been played on stage and screen for decades — Hal Holbrook performed his one-man Mark Twain Tonight! for more than fifty years.

  • 1938The Adventures of Tom SawyerFilm — David O. Selznick’s Technicolor version; the classic.
  • 1960The Adventures of Huckleberry FinnFilm — MGM; one of many — others followed in 1974, 1985 (PBS) and 1993 (Elijah Wood).
  • 1949A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s CourtFilm — Bing Crosby musical; the novel’s dark ending is gone.
  • 2001Mark TwainDocumentary — Ken Burns’ two-part PBS portrait — the best introduction to the man.

Frequently asked

What order should I read Mark Twain books in?

Read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) then Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885) — Huck is a direct sequel. Everything else stands alone: The Prince and the Pauper, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court and Pudd’nhead Wilson for novels; The Innocents Abroad, Roughing It and Life on the Mississippi for the travel books. The two late Tom Sawyer sequels are optional.

What is Mark Twain’s best book?

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is the consensus masterpiece and one of the most important American novels ever written. Tom Sawyer is the most beloved; Roughing It and Life on the Mississippi are the favorites of readers who love Twain the humorist.

Why is Mark Twain’s autobiography dated 1925 — didn’t it come out in 2010?

Both are right. An edited autobiography was first published in 1924, and the volumes in our list descend from that edition. Twain had asked that the complete text be withheld for 100 years after his death, so the full, uncensored Autobiography of Mark Twain appeared from the University of California Press in three volumes in 2010, 2013 and 2015.

What was Mark Twain’s real name?

Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835–1910). “Mark twain” is a riverboat leadsman’s call meaning two fathoms — twelve feet — of safe water, from his years as a Mississippi pilot.

Is Huckleberry Finn appropriate for kids?

It depends on the reader. Tom Sawyer is a children’s book; Huckleberry Finn is a novel for adults and older teens that uses the racial language of the 1840s South throughout. Many schools teach it in high school with context. For younger readers, Tom Sawyer and The Prince and the Pauper are the natural picks.
