Ian Fleming (1908–1964) was a British journalist and wartime Naval Intelligence officer, and it was that insider's knowledge of real espionage that gave James Bond his hard, convincing edge. Between 1953 and 1966 Fleming produced fourteen Bond books — twelve novels and two short-story collections — writing most of them in two-month bursts at his Goldeneye estate in Jamaica. The literary Bond is colder, more fallible and more human than the movie superspy, and reading Fleming in order lets you watch both the character and the author sharpen book by book.
